I was recently asked to provide an opinion as an expert witness for a potential court case involving DOT reflective conspicuity tape. The subject was simple but important: whether the reflective tape on a commercial vehicle was approved, correctly maintained and suitable for its intended use.
If you search online for truck accident lawyers discussing missing, damaged or non-approved DOT reflective tape, you will find many examples. One example is this article from Munley Law, which explains DOT reflective tape requirements for trucks:

This highlights an important point for fleet operators, trailer manufacturers, maintenance teams and vehicle owners. DOT tape is not just a strip of reflective material. If a vehicle is required to have DOT-C2 conspicuity tape, and that tape is missing, damaged, poorly maintained or not approved, it can create both safety and compliance issues.
At Heskins, we manufacture and supply reflective materials for commercial and industrial use, including DOT tape for vehicles that need compliant conspicuity marking. The correct tape, properly applied and maintained, helps improve vehicle visibility and reduce avoidable risk.
What Is DOT Tape?
DOT tape, often referred to as DOT-C2 reflective tape or conspicuity tape, is used on trailers, trucks and other commercial vehicles to make them more visible, especially at night or in low-light conditions.
The most common format is red and white reflective tape, applied to the rear and sides of trailers. Its purpose is to help other road users identify the size, shape and position of a large vehicle from a distance. This can be especially important on highways, loading areas, yards and poorly lit roads.
DOT tape may seem like a minor component, but it performs an important safety function. When a truck or trailer is parked, turning, reversing or moving slowly, reflective conspicuity tape can give other drivers more time to react.
Check Whether Your Vehicle Requires DOT Tape
The first step is simple: check whether your vehicle or trailer requires DOT-C2 conspicuity tape.
Requirements can depend on the vehicle type, size, weight and how it is used. Many commercial trailers operating on U.S. roads require approved reflective conspicuity markings. However, assumptions should not be made. Vehicle operators and fleet managers should check the applicable regulations for their vehicle category.
If DOT tape is required, it should not be treated as optional. It is part of the vehicle’s visibility system and should be selected, applied and maintained accordingly.
Check That the Tape Is Approved
The U.S. market contains many reflective tapes. Some are fully approved for DOT applications, while others may only look similar.
A proper 2-inch-wide DOT tape should have a clearly visible DOT-C2 mark. However, markings can be copied, so the printed mark alone should not be your only check.
A reliable supplier should be able to provide a certificate or supporting documentation. Asking for certification should not be considered unusual. It is a standard request, especially for vehicle manufacturers, fleet operators and companies working in regulated markets.
At Heskins, we use external testing laboratories for reflective material verification. Although we have calibrated reflectometers in-house for internal quality checks, external testing provides independent validation and helps support product integrity.
This matters because reflective performance cannot be judged accurately by appearance alone. A tape may look bright in a photograph, under a flashlight or in a warehouse, but still fail when tested against the required standard.
Check That the Tape Is Well Maintained
Even approved DOT tape must be maintained properly.
A simple inspection should identify whether the tape is missing, damaged, peeling, cracked, badly worn or obscured by dirt. If any section is damaged or missing, it should be replaced promptly.
This is especially important for vehicles exposed to harsh environments, including:
- Road salt
- Heavy rain
- Snow and ice
- Pressure washing
- Road debris
- Abrasion
- Chemical contamination
If you purchase air-sealed DOT reflective tape, such as some premium reflective constructions, ensure the edges are properly sealed. If the material is slit from log stock, unsealed edges can lead to premature failure.
If you are buying metallized reflective DOT tape, be aware that corrosion can be a concern in areas where roads are heavily salted during winter. In those environments, the tape may degrade faster than expected if the construction is not suitable.
Be Careful with Colors
Most DOT tape used for compliant vehicle conspicuity marking is red and white. This is the recognized format for many regulated vehicle applications.
There are situations where other color combinations may be supplied, such as blue and white reflective tape, but these should only be used where DOT or FMVSS requirements are not being enforced for that application.
For example, blue and white reflective tape can look excellent as a color combination, but it should not be assumed to be suitable for highway vehicles that require standard DOT-C2 red and white conspicuity markings.
Before using alternative colors, always confirm the vehicle’s use case and the rules that apply.
Why DOT Tape Should Not Be Overlooked
DOT reflective tape is a small product, but it can have significant consequences if it is ignored.
The basic checks are straightforward:
- Confirm whether the vehicle requires DOT tape.
- Make sure the tape is approved.
- Ask for certification if compliance matters.
- Apply the tape correctly to clean, suitable surfaces.
- Inspect it regularly.
- Replace damaged or missing sections immediately.
- Avoid non-standard colors unless you are certain they are appropriate.
Heskins supplies DOT reflective tape for vehicle manufacturers, fleet operators and maintenance teams that need dependable conspicuity marking products. Correctly specified and properly maintained DOT tape helps improve visibility, supports compliance and reduces unnecessary risk.
When it comes to commercial vehicle safety, the small details matter. DOT tape is one of those details.
