However, assumptions should not be made. Vehicle operators and fleet managers should check the applicable regulations for their vehicle category.
If DOT tape is required, it should not be treated as optional. It is part of the vehicle’s visibility system and should be selected, applied and maintained accordingly.
Check That the Tape Is Approved
The U.S. market contains many reflective tapes. Some are fully approved for DOT applications, while others may only look similar.
A proper 2-inch-wide DOT tape should have a clearly visible DOT-C2 mark. However, markings can be copied, so the printed mark alone should not be your only check.
A reliable supplier should be able to provide a certificate or supporting documentation. Asking for certification should not be considered unusual. It is a standard request, especially for vehicle manufacturers, fleet operators and companies working in regulated markets.

Be Careful with Colors

There are situations where other color combinations may be supplied, such as blue and white reflective tape, but these should only be used where DOT or FMVSS requirements are not being enforced for that application.
For example, blue and white reflective tape can look excellent as a color combination, but it should not be assumed to be suitable for highway vehicles that require standard DOT-C2 red and white conspicuity markings.
Before using alternative colors, always confirm the vehicle’s use case and the rules that apply.
