The marine sector has always been a key market for Heskins. Since the 1990s, we have supplied anti-slip tape and surface safety materials for use on submarines, naval vessels, commercial fishing boats, ferries, workboats, and luxury yachts.

Marine environments are among the harshest conditions any product can face. Constant exposure to saltwater, UV, heavy foot traffic, equipment movement, and temperature changes demands durable, purpose-built solutions. Over the years, we have developed a range of materials specifically engineered for marine performance.

Saltwater Resistance

One of the most common questions we receive is: “Can your anti-slip tape withstand saltwater?”

In many cases, yes.

Saltwater resistance is typically verified using recognized salt spray and immersion testing methods, such as ASTM B117. Materials are applied to prepared substrates and exposed to saltwater conditions for extended periods, with regular inspections to confirm adhesion and surface integrity.

These tests are similar to standards used for labeling hazardous chemical containers – applications that require long-term durability in corrosive environments.

While most of our marine-focused products are designed for saltwater exposure, we are always happy to advise on the correct grade for your specific application.

MIL-SPEC Requirements

For defense and naval contracts, anti-slip materials often need to meet specific MIL-SPEC standards. These requirements can be complex and application specific.

We regularly assist customers in navigating these specifications and can help ensure your solution aligns with the necessary performance criteria.

Choosing the Right Anti-Slip

Marine applications vary significantly, so selecting the right grade is essential.

Heavy-Duty Commercial Use

For harsh environments such as commercial fishing vessels in Alaskan waters, aggressive traction is critical. MagmaGrip features deep, sharp peaks and valleys that provide exceptional grip and resist clogging from ice, fish residue, and debris.

Utility and Passenger Craft

For general-purpose workboats or passenger vessels, our standard Safety-Grip offers high levels of traction without being overly harsh. It provides a strong coefficient of friction suitable for high-traffic areas.

Recreational and Pleasure Boats

Comfort is equally important on leisure vessels. Our Marine Safety-Grip uses a rounded S2 mineral, delivering reliable grip while being kinder to bare skin.

Non-Abrasive Options

For barefoot areas such as swim platforms or lounging decks, non-abrasive materials are often preferred.

Coarse Resilient provides high friction without abrasive minerals, making it comfortable yet durable. Our 3418 material is also widely used on handrails and grab points, enhancing grip without the rough feel of traditional abrasive products.

Custom Cutting and Printing

Precision converting is a core part of what we do. We manufacture anti-slip materials in custom widths and die-cut shapes to suit specific deck layouts and installation needs, maintaining tight tolerances throughout.

We also offer custom printing across our materials, allowing you to incorporate logos, vessel names, safety messaging, or bespoke designs directly onto the anti-slip surface.

Photoluminescent and SOLAS Reflective Options

For low-light and emergency situations, we supply photoluminescent (glow-in-the-dark) materials in Class A and Class C grades. These can be produced in anti-slip or smooth formats, depending on your requirements.

We also supply SOLAS-compliant reflective materials in various widths and custom shapes for vessels requiring certified visibility solutions.
